Love and Politics: Sister Quinlan and the Future We Have Desired
This speech was delivered at East London on December 9, 2012. It was on the 60th Anniversary of the killing of Sister Mary Aidan O.P, an Dominican Nun from Ireland who settled in South Africa. She was known professionally as Dr. Elsie Quinlan, M.B., Ch.B, a graduate of the Witwatersrand University. Sister Aidan was killed by angry protesters at Duncan Village just outside East London following the Government ban on the 7th November 1952 , ‘prohibiting all open-air meetings in the Eastern Cape’. In the overall context of the Defiance Campaign by the ANC, this ban led to a general strike action of all African workers in the Eastern Cape, called for the 10th November, 1952. Sister Aidan was killed by an angry mob on the afternoon of November 9, 1952. East London commemorated her tragic end on November 9, 10, and 11, 2012.
